I've heard a few guys complain about ladies that accept a date, eat, get an "emergency" call and run off. They do this over and over with different guys it seems.

Dates are not dinner anymore. I wanted to get ideas from this wonderful group on non-traditional dates that are cost effective for both. I usually pay my way for the first few times.
I've done some non-traditional dates. There is no money involved just precious time spent with someone.
National parks, to see the manatees. Downtown art shows, window shopping in antique stores, walking around any quaint downtown area.
What other ideas do you for a cost effective, wonderful date experience?
Well I tend to only arrange first dates as coffee dates. These do not have to take a long time, but can be extended if both feel like taking more time.
Usually I will prearrange that we speak online, telephone after the date to see how we both felt about it.
I wont make the "emergency call" because if I am going on the date, I already know that there are enough things I like about the person to at least give them some of my time.

True, I don't think it's a case of being forward.
How many of us have moaned on here or elsewhere about men disappearing without a trace after a couple of chats or even a couple of dates? Wouldn't we all rather now the truth than be left dangling?
So for me, that's what motivates me to be direct and honest about how I think a date is going .... it has never got nasty, in fact sometimes there has been relief on both sides!
I guess it's a case of "do unto others ..." less...

If it's a first date I try not to do the "emergency call" thing - if I don't feel it's going well I'd rather just say so and save us wasting each other's time and effort.
I don't really think most men are stupid enough to believe that so many women have a genuine emergency just a short way onto a first date are they??
For a first date to me it's most important to be able to chat, so that's the cinema off the list. Depending on the time of year and the location, a walk and a vi more...

For a first date to me it's most important to be able to chat, so that's the cinema off the list. Depending on the time of year and the location, a walk and a visit to a cafe or coffee shop would be good - if it's an afternoon it can always lead on to dinner if everything goes well. Living on an island there are lots of seaside and countryside walks to do and interesting places to see ... quiet enough to chat but busy enough to not feel isolated if you know what I mean!
A picnic might work well in the summer and can help keep the cost down if that's important.
In the end I think the company is most important - I'd rather share a bag of crisps (potato chips) with great company and interesting conversation than a lobster and champagne dinner feeling bored and uncomfortable with someone I found I wasn't keen on! less...

I'll take 4 thru 8 and going to market and/or a fair - for a variety of dates. Some parks have almost free movie/music nights ( food bank donation ) during the summer, a walk in the park or the conservation area always nice, homemade picnics are good and sharing a cup of tea/coffee is a good way to talk and observe. Fireworks are a must for summer dates as I love them - close 2nd to a bonfire.
Hope there are mini marshmallows in the hot chocolate. less...

When I am going out with someone new, I have a backup plan. If I don't like the guy, I send a message to a friend and have her call me right back with an "emergency". That's my "out" for the night, to save face for me AND the date. What's the point of prolonging the agony if I know I more...

Possibly, the men (not being sexist, just referring to those particular men...) could schedule dinner later on in the evening, to give the couple time to guage whether or not they have a mutual attraction, which would save the woman the trouble of lying and the man the cost of dinner!
Now, on to other types of dates: I love to browse bookstores; I went to an old bookstore once, with lots of old books just lying about-- it was great! Walking dogs along the beach is great, or at a large park. Just going somewhere along the water and watching the sunset is pretty awesome. Getting a drink at a bar/grille (not jsut a bar) is fine, too--to talk. Kareoke anyone? :) I can carry a tune! Maybe a light dancing lesson (there are free ones sometimes-- for the first session or to try it out)-- like salsa or mambo. That'd be fun. Going to the zoo or museums is/are fun. Aquariums. State fairs-- I mentioned this already-- but no rides for me! lol! A cooking class would be pretty cool. Poetry readings at local bars. A comedy show (no raunchy comedy, please). Watching an orchestra play or rehearse is often free. I could go on and on. I sure hope any prospective dates are reading this, so I don't have to be the one making plans on dates. I HATE that! --True less...

Well, I got a hotel the night before (he works graveyard shifts) and we met up for breakfast. I know that cost some money and he was nice enough to pay. On our first date he took me to Yosimite National park. He took me to what felt like the top of the world. It was so beautiful and all we did was ch more...

Another good Idea that we talked about is going fishing. That doesn't cost any money and you can really get to know someone when all you do is sit, wait, sit, wait, wait & talk LOL. less...
Many people I know agree to just meet for "coffee" at a coffee shop. They only move on to dinner if both parties are agreeable. Not free - but relatively inexpensive.
